80s Music Tragics #11

1980 The Music

1980 The Music

Side One
1. Turning Japanese – The Vapors

This song was number one in Australia (for one week only), reached #3 in the UK and only #36 in America. I thought the line was “Everyone avoids me like a Cyclone ranger” but apparently it’s “psyched Lone Ranger ……

2. Brass In Pocket – The Pretenders

Chrissie Hynde was initially reluctant for this song to be released as she wasn’t happy with it when they recorded it. She was somewhat sheepish when it reached #1. It was the 7th song ever played on MTV
3. The Boys Light Up – Australian Crawl
This song was banned by some local TV and radio stations due to its explicit lyrics
4. We Are Glass – Gary Numan
Gary Numan has been described as the “King of synthpop”
5. Cheap Wine – Cold Chisel
6. Geno – Dexy’s Midnight Runners
This song was DMR’s first number one, two years before Come on Eileen
7. Tired Of Toein’ The Line – Rocky Burnette

I know I’ve mentioned it before but this clip IS a classic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yPBwbdRuKPc
8. Crazy Little Thing Called Love – Queen
Written by Freddie Mercury, this was the band’s first US hit and the first song he played rhythm guitar on
9. You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’ – Long John Baldry

At 6 feet 7 inches tall Long John Baldry is probably the tallest artist to have a UK #1 hit. After they played in Bluesology together, Reginald Dwight adopted the surname John in his honor when going solo as Elton John

Side Two

1. Ride Like the Wind – Christopher Cross

If the backing vocalist sounds kinda familiar you may have heard Michael McDonald in The Doobie Brothers or Steely Dan
2. Same Old Girl – Darryl Cotton

This song earned the former Zoot frontman a Countdown award for Best Solo Male Performance in 1980, exactly 10 years after Zoot won the same award for a group
3. Total Control – The Motels
4. The Rose – Bette Midler

This was the title song of the 1980 movie, in which Bette Midler starred as Janis Joplin
5. All Out Of Love – Air Supply

Air Supply had 15 hits, 7 of which have the word “love” in the title. Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met when they were in the cast of Jesus Christ Superstar
6. Love At First Night – Kim Hart
7. How Do I Make You – Linda Ronstadt

This song was written by Billy Steinberg who also co-wrote Eternal Flame (The Bangles), Like a Virgin (Madonna) and True Colours (Cindy Lauper)
8. Working My Way Back To You – Spinners

Also known as Detroit Spinners, this band have been together since 1961. Only 2 original members remain and they are still touring
9. Together We Are Beautiful – Fern Kinney

I don’t remember this song, do you?
