One Day in Your Life – 80s Music Tragics #19

With grateful thanks again to Jono Coleman’s My Generation I can confidently state that the Top 5 songs this week in 1982 were:

1. Dexys Midnight Runners – Come on Eileen
Come On Eileen
This song knocked MJ’s Billy Jean off the number one spot in the US charts. ‘Eileen’ in the video was  played by Maire Fahey, sister of Siobhan Fahey of Bananarama.  Anyway here it is with a special award from me for services to overalls and underarm hair:

2. Survivor – Eye of the Tiger

OK I’m going to put on my Captain Obvious cape to remind you this was the theme song from Rocky IIIthe biggest movie of 1982.  It won a Grammy for Best Rock Performance By A Duo Or Group with Vocal and was also nominated for an Academy (Oscar) award for Best Original Song. Spending 6 weeks as number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart, the song was also number one in the UK,  Ireland and Australia and is #21 on Billboard’s All Time Top 100.

3. Bananarama – Shy Boy

Banarama Shy Boy

This was Bananarama’s first Top 40 hit in Australia and features a classic 80s video:

4. Melissa Manchester – You Should Hear How She Talks About You

This song gave Melissa Manchester her only Grammy award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance (she beat Olivia Newton-John, Linda Ronstadt, Juice Newton and Laura Branigan).  Here’s a classic clip, worth the price of admission to revisit the truly ghastly Solid Gold Dancers:

5. Yazoo – Don’t Go

In 1981 Vince Clarke left New Wave band Depeche Mode and shortly afterwards teamed up with singer Alison Moyet to form Yazoo. They disbanded in 1983 and she pursued a solo career.
