One Day in Your Life – 80s Music Tragics #23

Thanks Jono, yet again you’ve delivered the goods via My Generation. This week in 1983, the Top 5 songs were:

1. Gloria – Laura Branigan

This song was originally recorded in Italian by Umberto Tozzi in 1979.  Both versions were popular in many countries with other versions in French and Swedish.  Laura Branigan’s version reached #1 in Germany while the original Italian version made #2.  Branigan covered another Umberto Tozzi song “Ti Amo” on her 1984 album Self Control.

2. Twisting by the Pool – Dire Straits

3. You Can’t Hurry Love – Phil Collins

This song was originally a hit in 1966 for The Supremes. I love Phil’s version, and especially his video which pays homage to The Supremes and the clips of their day.

4. Heartbreaker – Dionne Warwick

This song was written Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb, The Bee Gees. They also sang on the track, their voices can be clearly heard during the chorus.  Dionne Warrick (her name was mis-spelled on the label of her first single and she stuck with it) is the cousin of Whitney Houston as their mothers are sisters.

5. Up Where We Belong – Joe Cocker & Jennifer Warnes

This was the theme song to the Richard Gere film An Officer and A Gentleman and won the Oscar for Best Original Song and the Grammy for Best Pop Performance by Duo or Group With Vocal in 1983.  I have a very soft spot for this song, as it was Andrew and my wedding song in 1989
