One Day in Your Life – 80s Music Tragics #31

It’s 2016 AFL and NRL Grand Final weekend and Triple M are having 80 hours of the 80s, yay! Loving the Roxette and Def Leppard power ballads.  During My Generation Jonesy and Amanda let slip that on this day in 1982 the number one song was Eye of the Tiger by Survivor. The song was the theme for the film Rocky III (the one with Mr T) and was written for the film after Queen refused permission for them to use Another One Bites the Dust, Sylvester Stallone’s preferred song. It was nominated for the 1982 Academy Award for Best Original Song, the only Oscar nomination for Rocky III. It lost out to “Up Where We Belong” by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes from the soundtrack of an Officer and a Gentleman, starring Richard Gere. Eye of the Tiger did win the band the Grammy Award for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal.  Survivor were pretty much one hit wonders in Australia but this song endures

Bonus prizes, it was also announced that on this day in 1983 the number one song was Australiana by Austen Tayshus. A spoken word comedy single, Australiana was at number one for 8 weeks and is the highest selling Australian single ever. Written by Billy Birmingham of The Twelfth Man fame, it was recorded live at The Comedy Store in Sydney. We still have a copy on vinyl, it was only available as a 12″
